Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja spun India to a commanding 280-run win against Bangladesh in the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. Ashwin, who was named Player of the Match, claimed 6-88, adding to his first-innings century. This marked Gautam Gambhir’s first Test as India’s head coach, beginning with a dominant performance.
Bangladesh, resuming at 158/4, initially showed resistance through skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (82) and Shakib Al Hasan (25). However, Ashwin broke the partnership in his first over, and with Jadeja’s help, Bangladesh crumbled from 205/5 to 234 all out. Ashwin took six wickets, while Jadeja chipped in with three.
Earlier, India had recovered from 144/6, thanks to Ashwin’s 113 and Jadeja’s 86, posting 376 in their first innings. Centuries from Shubman Gill (119*) and Rishabh Pant (109) in the second innings set Bangladesh a massive 515-run target. The visitors were bowled out for 234, giving India a 1-0 lead in the series.
