Mohammed Shami’s return to action after missing IPL 2024 due to Achilles tendon surgery has failed to make an impact in IPL 2025.

So far, he has claimed just six wickets in nine matches, with an unimpressive average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23.

During Sunrisers Hyderabad’s recent 38-run defeat to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, Shami conceded 48 runs in just three overs.

His performance further highlighted his ongoing struggles with rhythm and consistency.

Chopra Highlights Concerns Over Mohammed Shami’s Bowling

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo, Aakash Chopra expressed concern over Shami’s current form and fitness.

“Right now, what I see with Shami is pace down, and not enough balls being bowled in the same area,” Chopra observed. “This tournament is such that it doesn’t matter who you are. If you’re not delivering, you will be taken to the cleaners.”

Chopra emphasised that Shami’s trademark accuracy is missing. “That’s his strength, that relentless consistency. If he’s not able to get the ball right even now, it’s a serious concern”, he added.

Mohammed Shami’s Return To Action

Although Shami returned to domestic cricket late last year and featured in the Champions Trophy two months ago, Chopra believes the lingering impact of injury may still be affecting his game.

“He didn’t just come back last week. He’s played enough matches. If he’s still off the boil, and that’s due to the injury, and we’re assuming it is, then there’s a serious question mark about what happens next.”

England Tour Looms Large

India’s Test tour of England, starting on June 20, marks the beginning of their new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.

Shami has an underwhelming record in England, averaging 40.5 across 14 Tests.

India, having last won a Test series in England in 2007, will rely heavily on a strong pace attack.

Chopra underlined the significance of Shami’s potential absence or lack of form.

“At the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah was alone. Everyone said if Shami were there, it would’ve been different. But now the question is — will Shami be in England, and what kind of Shami will turn up?”
