What’s Your Trigger? Expert Shares Trigger Points In A Relationship

Relationships are a complex interplay of emotions, experiences, and dynamics. Often, individuals find themselves unexpectedly reacting strongly to certain situations or behaviours in their relationships. Therapist Sadaf Siddiqi believes that these emotional responses, commonly referred to as triggers, are an indication of past grievances as well as current functioning. While thoroughly explaining why we feel triggered in a relationship and how we can manage our emotions, she asserted it is a must that we initiate by reflecting on the source of our triggers. In this article, we will delve into eight reasons shared by the therapist that often trigger a person in a relationship.

  • The first reason that Siddiqi highlighted was when we start internalizing our partner’s behaviour.
  • When we feel unheard or unseen in a relationship, it triggers us to behave differently in order to claim the attention that we deserve.
  • When we expect our partner to speculate our desires. Thus, when they fail to read our minds and figure out what we are looking for, we get triggered.
  • When you have trust issues consequent to your past relationships. Hence, you start overanalyzing everything that your partner does and thinking of the worst-case scenarios.
  • When you feel like your partner does not acknowledge and appreciate the things that you do for them.
  • Another reason that can trigger us is when we feel like our core needs, such as love, reliability and the need for space are not met by our partner.

While concluding the post, Siddiqi reaffirmed that the aforementioned steps are life-changing. She also mentioned that it is not necessary for people to walk on this path alone, seeking help from a professional is also a great way to obtain your goal.
