Skin Specialists Advise Correct SPF Use To Prevent UV Damage

Dermatologists clarify sunscreen SPF myths, highlighting proper use, reapplication, and additional measures to protect skin from UV damage.

Skin Specialists Advise Correct SPF Use To Prevent UV Damage

Dermatologists are clarifying sunscreen use amid widespread confusion about SPF and UV protection. Higher SPF provides stronger defence but does not make skin fully immune to sun damage.

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures how long sunscreen delays sunburn compared to unprotected skin. For example, skin that burns after ten minutes in sunlight lasts 300 minutes under SPF 30.

Dr Shweta Mishra, a cosmetic surgeon in New Delhi, said higher SPF protects against harmful UV rays linked to skin ageing, pigmentation, and cancer. She warned that SPF numbers alone cannot prevent all sun-related damage.

Dr Rinky Kapoor, a Mumbai-based dermatologist, noted that people often assume higher SPF equals better protection. She said SPF 50 provides strong defence without requiring extremely high ratings like SPF 60 or 70.

Both specialists emphasised that no sunscreen blocks all UV rays. Reapplying every two to three hours remains crucial. They also urged additional precautions such as wearing hats, sunglasses, and seeking shade.

Experts recommend applying sunscreen evenly and generously to exposed areas, including the face, neck, and hands. They stressed daily use—even on cloudy days or indoors—since UV rays penetrate windows.

Dermatologists advised consulting professionals to select SPF based on skin type, local climate, and sun exposure duration. A customised sunscreen plan enhances protection and preserves skin health.

In summary, higher SPF boosts UV defence, but proper application and timely reapplication remain essential. Combining broad-spectrum sunscreen with protective clothing and shade reduces sun damage effectively.

Experts concluded that education on SPF, consistent usage, and complementary measures are key to reducing ultraviolet radiation risks. Proper awareness can protect citizens’ skin and prevent long-term health issues.
