We’ve all heard that sitting for long hours can cause weight gain, backaches and lifestyle diseases. But here’s something that may shock you: Prolonged sitting can actually reduce your lung capacity.
Dr Rajkumar K, senior consultant in pulmonology at MGM Malar Hospital, Chennai, explained how desk jobs and sedentary routines silently harm our lungs.
What the Studies Say
Dr Rajkumar pointed to a 2014 study in The European Respiratory Journal:
If we spend most of our day sitting, we might notice that we get tired easily and can’t catch our breath. Your heart also works harder.
How to Protect Your Lungs
The good news? These harmful effects are preventable with small changes. Dr Rajkumar suggested:
“Simple steps can reverse the damage of sitting. Staying active ensures stronger lungs, better posture, and improved overall health,” he advised.
Sitting too long? Take breaks to stretch or walk; it not only eases your back but also supports your lungs.
