Neurosurgeon Reveals Everyday Habits That Gradually Harm Brain Health

A leading American neurosurgeon, Dr Richard Veyna, has warned that several common lifestyle habits could be quietly damaging the brain over time.

In a recent social media post, the specialist, who has more than 25 years of medical experience, outlined four behaviours that hinder brain performance and accelerate ageing.

Dr Veyna stressed that chronic lack of sleep significantly affects the brain’s ability to repair and rejuvenate itself.

“Without sufficient rest, the brain cannot flush out toxins or consolidate memories,” he explained.

This impairment, he added, can gradually lead to reduced concentration, poor decision-making, and memory loss.

The neurosurgeon also highlighted the importance of physical activity, noting that it directly influences mental sharpness.

“Exercise increases blood flow to the brain dramatically, which improves memory and focus,” he said.

Regular exercise, even in short bursts, boosts oxygen levels in the brain, enhancing cognitive resilience and overall well-being.

Dr Veyna pointed out that prolonged stress is another major threat to brain health.

Elevated cortisol levels caused by constant pressure can damage neurons and hinder brain function. He advised incorporating mindfulness techniques, meditation, or simple relaxation breaks to keep stress in check.

Equally concerning, he warned, are ultra-processed diets loaded with sugar and refined carbohydrates.

“Such diets increase inflammation and speed up brain ageing,” Dr Veyna remarked.

He further recommended switching to nutrient-rich whole foods to promote cognitive longevity and reduce inflammation.

According to Dr Veyna, maintaining a healthy brain does not require radical changes.

“Being mindful of these habits and making small, consistent improvements can go a long way in preserving brain health,” he concluded.
