Maha Shivratri 2024: Fasting Rules, Rituals, and Offerings

Maha Shivratri 2024 is right around the corner, marking one of the most sacred nights for Hindus, especially for devotees of Lord Shiva throughout the country. From Kashmir to Tamil Nadu, this festival is observed with distinct traditions and utter devotion by Hindus. Maha Shivratri is the most significant among the monthly Masik Shivratris, falling on the fourteenth day of the dark (waning) half of the lunar month of Phalguna or Magha, a day before the new moon. Observing a day-long fast on Mahashivratri holds immense spiritual importance, akin to year-round worship of Shiva, and is believed to lead to salvation and the absolution of sins. This festival is referenced in various Puranas, including Skanda Purana, Linga Purana, and Padma Purana.

Maha Shivratri Fasting Guidelines

Fasting is known to purify both body and mind, heighten alertness, and prepare individuals for dedicated worship. While some devotees opt for a fast without food and water, others adhere to a diet of vrat-friendly foods such as sago, millet, pumpkin, potato, makhana, arbi, banana, and yogurt. It is essential to abstain from wheat, rice, salt, specific vegetables, pulses, and other prohibited foods. Non-vegetarian items, onions, and garlic should be strictly avoided, even for those not observing the fast.

Offerings to Lord Shiva

To seek blessings of success, prosperity, peace, and happiness, Lord Shiva is traditionally offered bel patra, dhatura fruit, raw rice, milk, curd, sandalwood, ghee, and water. Additionally, sweets made from milk and its products, such as barfi, peda, and kheer, are presented to the deity.

Maha Shivratri Fasting Do’s

  1. On Trayodashi, a day before Maha Shivratri, devotees should consume a single meal to prepare for the fast.
  2. On the day of the fast, wake up early, take a bath, and wear fresh clothes.
  3. Take a sankalp (vow) for a dedicated day-long fast following all the rules.
  4. Bathe the Shivalinga with water, milk, saffron, honey, and Ganga water before worship.
  5. During the fast, stick to satvik and vrat-friendly foods, avoiding prohibited items.
  6. Stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet to stay energized.
  7. The night of Shivratri is significant; perform the puja one or four times during the night.
  8. After completing the puja, continue the fast, breaking it the next day before Chaturdashi tithi ends.

Maha Shivratri Fasting Don’ts

  1. Avoid offering coconut water to Shivling, although coconuts can be offered to Lord Shiva.
  2. Do not consume anything offered to Lord Shiva to prevent bad luck.
  3. Refrain from offering flowers like kevada and champa, as they are considered cursed.
  4. Prefer sandalwood paste over a kumkum tilak during the puja.
  5. Moderate tea and coffee consumption to prevent dehydration.
  6. Monitor blood sugar levels if diabetic.
  7. Choose foods aiding digestion over deep-fried options.
  8. Include probiotics like curd in your diet for a healthy gut.
