As the festival of colours approaches, dermatologists advise preparing your skin in advance to prevent irritation, dryness and breakouts.
Synthetic colours, prolonged sun exposure and repeated washing can strip the skin of its natural oils. A simple yet effective pre-Holi routine can act as a protective shield.
Two to three days before Holi, exfoliate your skin using a mild scrub suited to your skin type. This helps remove dead skin cells and creates a smooth base.
Avoid harsh scrubbing immediately before the festival, as it may make skin more sensitive to colours and sunlight.
Well-hydrated skin absorbs less colour. Begin moisturising regularly at least a week before Holi. Use a nourishing cream containing ceramides or hyaluronic acid to strengthen the skin barrier.
For dry skin, opt for thicker creams, while those with oily skin should choose lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas.
On the morning of Holi, apply a generous layer of coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil on exposed areas such as the face, neck, arms and legs.
Dermatologists recommend this traditional method as it creates a protective film, making colours easier to wash off later.
Holi is often celebrated outdoors under strong sunlight. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or above at least 20 minutes before stepping out. Reapply if you remain outdoors for extended periods. This prevents tanning, sunburn and pigmentation.
Lips are highly prone to dryness and cracking. Use a thick lip balm with SPF. Apply petroleum jelly around the eyes and on cuticles to prevent colour from settling into delicate areas.
Those with sensitive skin may also apply a light layer of barrier cream for extra protection.
Chemical peels, laser treatments, waxing or bleaching should be avoided at least a week before Holi.
Such procedures make the skin vulnerable and increase the risk of rashes and irritation when exposed to colours.
Whenever possible, opt for herbal or organic gulal. Natural colours made from flowers and plant extracts are far less likely to trigger allergic reactions compared to synthetic dyes containing harmful chemicals.
Skin health also depends on internal hydration. Drink sufficient water and include seasonal fruits in your diet. Proper hydration helps maintain elasticity and reduces post-Holi dryness.
With mindful preparation and simple precautions, you can enjoy Holi 2026 without compromising your skin’s health.
A protective routine not only prevents damage but also ensures your natural glow remains intact long after the celebrations end.
