Grey Hair: A Sign Of Vitamin Deficiency?

Noticing more grey strands than usual? While genetics and ageing are often blamed, recent research suggests that deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals could be accelerating the process.

A 2022 study published in the International Journal of Dermatology found that individuals with premature greying had significantly lower levels of vitamin B12, zinc, magnesium and copper compared to those with natural hair colour.

Grey hair occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing pigment in your hair, become less active.

Deficiencies in specific nutrients can impair melanocyte function, leading to an earlier onset of grey hair.

Essential for DNA synthesis and red blood cell production, vitamin B12 supports melanocyte activity.

Low levels have been linked to premature greying, as melanocytes cannot function optimally without sufficient vitamin B12.

Including foods such as eggs, dairy, and fortified cereals can help maintain healthy hair colour. This vitamin supports overall hair follicle health.

Studies show that low vitamin D levels can lead to premature greying of hair.

Sun exposure and dietary sources like fatty fish, fortified milk and egg yolks can improve vitamin D levels.

Biotin is essential for hair growth and strength. While rare, biotin deficiency may contribute to hair thinning and premature greying.

Nuts, seeds and whole grains are excellent sources to include in your diet.

Pantothenic acid helps in red blood cell formation and nourishes hair follicles.

Deficiency may accelerate grey hair onset. Foods like eggs, avocados and legumes are rich in vitamin B5.

Copper helps produce melanin directly, while zinc supports the growth and repair of hair tissue.

Iron delivers oxygen to follicles. Studies show that low levels of these minerals can cause premature greying.

Maintaining a balanced diet rich in these vitamins and minerals can support healthy hair and may help delay the onset of grey hair.

If you’re concerned about premature greying, consider consulting a healthcare professional for personalised advice and potential supplementation.
