From Comfort To Consequences: What Really Happens When You Rub Your Eyes

Most people instinctively rub their eyes when they feel weary, stressed or after long hours at a screen. It delivers an immediate sensation of relief and contentment, but what truly happens beneath that fleeting comfort?

When you press or rub your eyes, sensitive nerve endings around and behind the eyeball are activated. This sends signals to the brain that can diminish sensations of strain, dryness or irritation.

The motion also temporarily boosts tear flow, aiding lubrication and helping to clear tiny irritants such as dust or allergens.

The action does more than just ease physical discomfort. By stimulating the vagus nerve, a major component of the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s ‘rest and digest’ response is engaged.

Activation of this nerve can slow the heart rate and generate a transient feeling of calm or relaxation, which many interpret as emotional comfort.

Although gentle rubbing may feel beneficial in isolated moments, it can become problematic if repeated often or performed forcefully.

Frequent eye rubbing can injure the delicate cornea, the transparent front layer of the eye, increasing the likelihood of keratoconus, a condition where the cornea thins and bulges outward, distorting vision.

Tiny blood vessels are breaking, causing redness or bruising around the eyes.

Aggravated inflammation in allergy sufferers, which promotes further itchiness and discomfort.

Transfer of bacteria and dirt from hands to eyes, escalating the risk of conjunctivitis or other infections.

In summary, occasional mild rubbing may provide short-lived relief, but it is not a recommended habitual strategy for managing eye discomfort.

Ophthalmologists advise patients to address persistent irritation with safer options such as lubricating eye drops. They also recommend seeking a professional evaluation instead of repeatedly rubbing the eyes.
