Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday honoured Chandra Shekhar Azad, the fearless freedom fighter, on his martyrdom day. He praised Azad for sacrificing everything to free Mother India from colonial rule, calling him an enduring symbol of courage and determination.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “On the martyrdom day of Chandra Shekhar Azad, the valiant son of Mother India, my respectful homage to him. He sacrificed everything to free Mother India from the shackles of slavery, for which he will be remembered forever.”
In another post, the Prime Minister added, “The life of the immortal revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad teaches us that the resolve to stand firm against injustice is the true valor. The saga of his sacrifice for the motherland will continue to inspire every generation of the nation. There is nothing greater than courage in the three worlds. The brave one protects everything; everything is established in the brave.”
Born on July 23, 1906, in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, Azad showed courage early.
At 15, he was arrested during the Non-Cooperation Movement.
In court, he called himself ‘Azad’ (free), named his father ‘Swatantrata’ (freedom), and gave his residence as ‘prison’.
Disappointed by Gandhi ending the movement in 1922, he joined the Hindustan Republican Army and took part in the 1925 Kakori train robbery.
In 1928, he helped reorganise the HRA into the HSRA to fight for a socialist republic.
After Lala Lajpat Rai’s death, Azad, Bhagat Singh, and Rajguru sought revenge.
Singh and Rajguru killed officer John Saunders, while Azad shot a pursuing constable. He guided Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt in the 1929 Central Legislative Assembly bombing to make a political statement without fatalities.
Azad actively participated in the December 1929 attempt to derail the Viceroy’s train, demonstrating his commitment to armed resistance.
Though absent from the 1928 Feroz Shah Kotla meeting, he became HSRA Military Commander, leading organised actions against the British.
On February 27, 1931, police cornered him at Alfred Park, Allahabad (now Prayagraj). True to his vow, he fired his last bullet on himself, immortalising his sacrifice for India’s freedom.
