Across Indian gardens and orchards, mango trees often display a striking transformation in spring, as leafy canopies give way to clusters of delicate, broom-like flowers.

While visually appealing, this stage requires careful attention from farmers, as it plays a decisive role in determining the final fruit yield.

The mango tree, scientifically known as Mangifera indica, is a large and long-living plant that can grow up to 20 metres tall. Its branches produce long flower clusters, known as panicles, which contain hundreds of tiny blossoms at different stages of development.

Agricultural experts note that the tree naturally produces far more flowers than it can sustain. Only a small fraction of these blossoms eventually develop into fruit, while the rest fall off during the growth process.

Flower and fruit drop is a common concern in mango cultivation and can significantly affect production.

According to horticulture sources, this process typically occurs in stages. It begins with the shedding of tiny, newly formed fruits, followed by the dropping of slightly larger young fruits.

The final stage involves fruit loss at a later stage of development.

Several factors contribute to this issue, including poor pollination, extreme weather conditions, water stress, strong winds, and overcrowding of flowers on the same branch.

Experts recommend thinning excess flower clusters to allow the tree to direct its energy towards healthier fruits. Dense, broom-like panicles often indicate overcrowding, signalling the need for pruning and better management.

Advisers also urge farmers to regularly inspect the panicles and remove weaker or excessively dense clusters.

Maintaining consistent irrigation and proper nutrition is equally important. Stressed trees are more prone to shedding flowers and immature fruits.

Simple and cost-effective practices can help improve outcomes. Pruning twigs carrying excess blossoms before full bloom reduces competition among flowers and enhances fruit quality.

In some cases, growth regulators such as NAA (naphthalene acetic acid) may be used to control premature fruit drop, though this requires proper guidance.

While broom-like blossoms add beauty to mango trees, they also signal a critical stage that demands attention.

With timely care and appropriate techniques, farmers can minimise losses and ensure a healthier, more productive crop.
