People in Delhi purchased about 64 lakh bottles for ₹121 crore in the three days preceding Diwali. On the eve of Diwali, Delhi saw a record-breaking ₹53.89 crore in booze sales, according to PTI, which cited officials. Over three crore bottles were sold in the 17 days leading up to Diwali, according to government figures, generating ₹525.84 crore in income for the capital. Of these, in the week leading up to Diwali, alone, sales of more than one crore liquor bottles totaling ₹234.15 crore were reported to the government.
In the three days leading up to Diwali on Sunday, individuals in Delhi purchased about 64 lakh bottles at a cost of ₹121 crore. On Diwali, the stores were closed.
According to PTI, the three days prior to Diwali last year saw the sale of 13.46 lakh, 15 lakh, and 19.39 lakh bottles of alcohol.
“This year the number jumped to over three crore, recording a 42 per cent growth, as compared to 2022 when 2.11 crore liquor bottles were sold in Delhi during the 17 days leading up to Diwali”, officials said.
Four Delhi government organizations manage more than 650 liquor establishments in the nation’s capital.

Between November 1 and November 10, ₹1400 crore worth of alcoholic beverages were consumed in Uttar Pradesh, a neighboring state.
According to state excise minister Nitin Agarwal, “alcohol worth nearly ₹1400 crore has been consumed in the state in the past 10 days since November 1, an increase of nearly 15% over the same period Last year.
