Are Jaggery And Brown Sugar Really Healthier Than Refined Sugar?

Increasing awareness about the harmful effects of sugar has led many people to seek healthier replacements. The risks associated with excessive sugar consumption are significant.

A 2015 study linked high sugar intake to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), both directly and indirectly.

Beyond these conditions, excessive sugar can contribute to fatty liver, reduced insulin sensitivity, elevated uric acid levels, and weight gain. Since weight gain affects several major physiological systems, cutting back on sugar has become an important health priority.

In many Indian households, palm jaggery is a common sweetener used in traditional dishes. Derived from palm sap, it offers a deep, earthy flavour and is often perceived as a natural alternative to refined sugar.

Experts, however, caution against assuming it is entirely healthy. While palm jaggery does contain trace minerals such as iron, the amounts are minimal and provide limited nutritional benefit.

It is also high in calories and has a high glycaemic index, meaning it can cause spikes in blood sugar levels.

Nutritionists recommend limiting intake to around two teaspoons per day.

Manufacturers and retailers frequently market brown sugar as a healthier replacement for white sugar. Its colour comes from retained molasses, giving it a slightly different taste and appearance.

Despite this, nutritionally, it remains similar to refined sugar. It is calorie-dense and has a high glycaemic index, with roughly 50 calories per tablespoon.

As with regular sugar and jaggery, consumption should be moderate, ideally no more than two tablespoons daily. Stevia and monk fruit are less processed sweeteners that contain zero calories.

Nutrition experts highlight these as preferable options, particularly for those trying to reduce overall sugar intake.

While alternatives such as jaggery and brown sugar may seem healthier, they still require portion control. For those consuming higher amounts of sweeteners, zero-calorie and minimally processed options may be a wiser choice.
