Keeping your air conditioning system in good condition is crucial for ensuring optimal performance during peak summer months.
Leading manufacturers such as Hitachi and Electrolux state that properly maintained units can operate between 5 and 15 per cent more efficiently, particularly when airflow remains unobstructed.
Before starting the cleaning process, it is important to gather the necessary tools. These include a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment, a soft-bristled brush such as an old toothbrush, a screwdriver, a lint-free microfibre cloth, and a mild cleaning solution.
You should also ensure easy access to both the indoor and outdoor units. Proper preparation helps avoid interruptions and ensures delicate components are handled with care, achieving effective and thorough cleaning.
For safety, turn off the power supply at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit before beginning any maintenance work. If the AC has been in use, set it to ‘Fan Mode’ for around 30 to 40 minutes to remove internal moisture, making cleaning easier and preventing residue build-up.
Open the front panel and gently remove the filters. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to eliminate dust and debris.
After vacuuming, rinse the filters in lukewarm water below 40°C using a mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Do not expose the filters to direct sunlight, as heat may damage the mesh. Allow them to dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated space before reinstalling to prevent odours and mould growth.
For deeper cleaning, apply a no-rinse evaporator coil cleaner. Once you switch the unit back on, the condensate system will drain the dissolved dirt.
Blocked drain lines often cause indoor water leakage. Locate the condensate tray and pipe, then flush them with a mixture of equal parts distilled vinegar and water to remove algae and fungus. If needed, use a wet or dry vacuum to clear stubborn blockages.
The outdoor condenser is exposed to dust and debris. Use a garden hose to gently wash the coils from the inside out with low-pressure water. Avoid high-pressure sprays, as they may bend the fins.
Ensure there is at least 60 centimetres of clear space around the outdoor unit.
Remove leaves, weeds, and debris to allow proper airflow. This helps prevent overheating and reduces the risk of system failure during extreme heat.
