In a significant legal and regulatory development, Elon Musk-run X Corp has formally acknowledged serious lapses in controlling obscene and unlawful content generated on its platform, largely attributed to its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok. Responding to firm action by the Government of India, the company has committed to full compliance with Indian laws and initiated large-scale content removal.
Government sources confirmed that X has already blocked nearly 3,500 objectionable posts and deleted over 600 user accounts linked to the circulation of obscene imagery.
Officials stated unequivocally that the platform has assured authorities it will no longer permit such content in any form.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a strict notice to X Corp after identifying repeated failures to prevent the generation and dissemination of non-consensual sexual, nude, and indecent content through Grok and related AI services.
The ministry demanded an Action Taken Report within 72 hours, warning that continued non-compliance would invite severe legal consequences.
AI Accountability Under Scrutiny
In its directive, MeitY made it clear that violations could trigger action under multiple statutes, including the Information Technology Act, IT Rules, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and other applicable laws.
The ministry emphasised that accountability would extend not only to the platform but also to its responsible officers and offending users.
The government further instructed X Corp to conduct a comprehensive overhaul of Grok’s technical safeguards and governance architecture.
Authorities directed the platform to enforce strict user policies, including immediate suspension and permanent termination of violators.
Regulators also mandated the prompt removal of unlawful content without destroying or tampering with digital evidence.
In response, X Corp stated that it continues to act against illegal material, including Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), and remains engaged with Indian law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
Elon Musk reinforced the company’s position by warning users that generating illegal content through Grok would attract the same consequences as directly uploading such material.
This episode marks a critical moment in India’s evolving AI governance framework. It reinforces the government’s stance that technological innovation cannot override legal responsibility and that AI-driven platforms must operate strictly within the bounds of national law.
