UP Govt Files States Report In Supreme Court On Sambhal Case

The Uttar Pradesh government has filed a states report in the Supreme Court addressing the ongoing issue related to a well in the Sambhal Jama Masjid.

The report refutes claims made by the Masjid Committee that the well belongs to mosque property, confirming instead that it lies on public land.

Additionally, the government has rejected the Masjid Committee’s attempt to mislead the court with false evidence, asserting that the well is part of a larger initiative by the district administration to rejuvenate 19 ancient wells for community benefit.

Details Of The Dispute

The Masjid Committee had earlier claimed that the well was part of the mosque’s property, and thus any intervention in it could lead to religious unrest.

The Supreme Court had intervened earlier, halting proceedings in the case and cautioning the parties about potential violence arising from the situation.

The government, however, clarified that the revival of the well would be part of a larger plan for water conservation and that it would benefit all communities once revitalized.

Government’s Actions & Statements

The report further emphasized that the district administration is actively rejuvenating these wells as part of a broader initiative to promote rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharging.

This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable water management practices and aims to mitigate the region’s ongoing water scarcity challenges.

The administration is focusing on revitalizing the wells to address the pressing water shortage issues in the area.

Once restored, these wells will serve as a crucial resource for the community, providing a reliable source of water that people from all walks of life can access.

The government aims to foster inclusivity by ensuring that all communities, irrespective of their background, benefit from this rejuvenation project.

Implications & Future Actions

The Supreme Court had earlier paused all proceedings on the matter after the Masjid Committee raised concerns that revitalizing the well within the mosque premises could trigger violence.

The state has formed a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the violence that occurred during the survey of the Jama Masjid in November.

The commission is expected to submit its report in two months, which will provide further clarity on the matter.
