Tahir Hussain Seeks Bail To Contest Delhi Polls; Police Strongly Oppose

The Delhi Police has opposed the interim bail plea of Tahir Hussain, accused in the murder of IB employee Ankit Sharma during the 2020 Delhi riots. Hussain, a former AAP councillor, sought bail from the Delhi High Court to contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the Delhi Police, argued that Hussain can file his nomination from jail. He pointed out that several candidates have done so in the past. Justice Neena Bansal Krishna also noted that nominations can be filed while in custody.

Hussain recently joined Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM and was declared the party’s candidate from the Mustafabad constituency. His lawyer contended that AIMIM, being a recognized political party, must file asset details and a formal proposal for his nomination.

The court has scheduled the next hearing on Hussain’s interim bail plea for January 14. Meanwhile, his regular bail application in the murder case will be heard on January 15. Hussain has been in jail for over four years, and his lawyer argued that the trial’s prolonged timeline violates his right to bail.

The case stems from the killing of Ankit Sharma during the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. According to the chargesheet, a mob outside Hussain’s house in Khajuri Khas targeted and murdered Sharma before dumping his body in a drain. The post-mortem report confirmed the use of sharp weapons in the murder.

Tahir Hussain faces multiple charges, including inciting and funding riots. He was expelled from the Aam Aadmi Party following these allegations. The lower court previously denied his bail plea on December 3, citing the seriousness of the charges.
