The Supreme Court will hear the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) challenge to the suspension of Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s life sentence in the 2017 Unnao rape case, a move that has reignited national outrage and raised serious questions about justice delivery in crimes against women.
A vacation bench led by the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices JK Maheshwari and Augustine George Masih, will take up the matter for hearing on Monday, according to the official cause list of the apex court.
The CBI has approached the Supreme Court against the December 23 order of the Delhi High Court, which suspended Sengar’s life sentence and granted him conditional bail while his appeal remains pending.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former Bharatiya Janata Party legislator, stands convicted for the kidnapping and rape of a minor girl in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh.
In December 2019, a trial court sentenced him to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life and imposed a fine of ₹25 lakh, following a case that shocked the nation and exposed deep fault lines in the system’s handling of crimes against women.
The High Court order triggered sharp reactions from the survivor’s family and women’s rights activists, who took to protests and public statements, asserting that the suspension of sentence sent a deeply troubling signal.
They warned that such relief to a convicted offender risks ‘shaking public faith’ and weakening deterrence in cases of sexual violence.
During proceedings in the Delhi High Court, the CBI had firmly opposed Sengar’s application, underscoring the seriousness of the offence, the survivor’s vulnerability, and the broader societal implications of granting bail in such cases.
Despite these objections, a division bench comprising Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar granted conditional bail, citing the pendency of the appeal.
