Supreme Court Orders Closure Of 15-Year-Old Case Against Mayawati

The Supreme Court has ordered the closure of a 15-year-old case filed against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati. The petition, originally filed in 2009, sought action against Mayawati for allegedly misusing public funds during her tenure as Chief Minister.

Filed by Supreme Court lawyer Ravikant, demanded the recovery of public money spent by Mayawati for the construction of statues in parks using government funds. The petition also called for the Election Commission to seize BSP’s election symbol, the elephant, as part of the allegations. Ravikant argue that Mayawati misuse public money by installing statues of herself and her party’s election symbol in the parks,  in Lucknow and Noida during her time as Chief Minister from 2007 to 2012.

Court’s Initial Observations

During earlier hearings, the Supreme Court had indicated that Mayawati might need to return the public funds spent on these statues. The parks in question featured statues of prominent figures such as Baba Saheb Ambedkar, BSP founder Kanshiram, Mayawati herself, and the BSP’s election symbol, the elephant.

After years of legal proceedings, the Supreme Court has now decided to close the case, bringing an end to the long-standing petition against Mayawati.
