The discovery of cash at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma has prompted a swift investigation.
An in-house committee, appointed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, visited Justice Varma’s residence at 1:00 PM to assess the situation.
After a brief inspection, the committee left the residence 45 minutes later.
The committee, comprised of several prominent judicial figures, including Chief Justice Sheel Nagu of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, and Justice Anu Shivraman of the Karnataka High Court, is overseeing the investigation.
Fire & Cash Discovery
The committee focused on examining the storage room in Justice Varma’s official residence, where a fire broke out around 11 PM on March 14.
Sources suggest that the committee will first gather the statement of the person who reported the incident.
Additionally, the committee may meet with the police commissioner and the Director-General of the Fire Brigade to gather further details.
The committee will ask Justice Varma to explain the discovered cash and analyze his mobile phone’s call detail records.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Justice Varma has firmly denied the allegations in a letter to the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
He rejected all claims regarding the discovery of cash at his residence, stating that his staff found no cash or burnt currency at the scene.
Police Findings & Security Guard’s Testimony
The police commissioner shared images and videos of the partially burned cash with the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.
A security guard at Justice Varma’s bungalow later informed investigators that they cleared the debris from the room on March 15.
Investigators continue the inquiry, and they will likely conduct forensic analysis on the burned materials found at the scene.
The investigation will progress over the coming weeks, with further forensic analysis and additional testimony.
The in-house committee will identify whether any judicial norms were violated or if there is more to the incident than currently understood.
