The Supreme Court has disposed of the petition filed by the victim’s parents in the RG Kar rape and murder case of Kolkata. The court allowed the petitioners to approach the High Court for a reinvestigation of the case.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented the CBI in court. He said the parents’ application contained several comments.
The court will hear the main petition in the week starting from May 13.
In the last hearing, the court warned the petitioner’s lawyer to be cautious in the affidavit. The court had already sentenced Sanjay Roy in this case. Following the warning, the victim’s family lawyer withdrew the petition.
The Sealdah Court sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment and imposed a ₹50,000 fine.
The state government was directed to pay ₹17 lakh compensation to the deceased trainee doctor’s family.
The court ruled that the crime did not qualify as heinous, which ruled out the death penalty.
The Kolkata High Court handed over the case to the CBI. The CBI arrested former RG Kar principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station officer Abhijit Mandal for allegedly destroying evidence.
However, both were released on bail due to the CBI’s failure to file a charge sheet within the time limit.
In conclusion, the Supreme Court’s decision allows the victim’s parents to push for a reinvestigation through the High Court.
