Geeta Rani Sharma had previously filed the petition in the Allahabad High Court, which rejected it, prompting her to approach the apex court. The High Court had also accepted the objections raised by the Central Election Commission, removing the Election Commissioner, the DM, and certain opposition parties from the case.

Geeta Rani, who contested the Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate, claims she left her police job and pursued an LLB to enter politics. She has previously contested the 2022 assembly elections, during which she faced several allegations against the Congress party.

Dr. Mahesh Sharma, a three-term MP from Gautam Buddha Nagar, secured a hat-trick of victories in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In the latest polls, he defeated Mahendra Singh Nagar of the Samajwadi Party by a significant margin.

The Supreme Court’s decision in this case could have far-reaching implications, particularly regarding the conduct of election officials and the transparency of the nomination process.
