Permanent Trustee Rajesh Mehta Alleges Fraud in Lilavati Medical Trust, Seeks Stay Order

Rajesh Kishore Mehta has approached the Charity Commissioner alleging large-scale financial irregularities, forged resolutions and illegal fund withdrawals within the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust.

Permanent Trustee Rajesh Mehta Alleges Fraud in Lilavati Medical Trust, Seeks Stay Order

Serious allegations have surfaced within the Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust, as permanent trustee Rajesh Kishore Mehta has written to the Charity Commissioner, accusing his brothers, Prashant Mehta and Rajiv Mehta, of financial misconduct, forgery and siphoning off more than ₹100 crore from the trust’s funds.

In his complaint, Rajesh Mehta alleged that the actions of the other trustees are against the interests of the trust and are adversely affecting the functioning of Lilavati Hospital. A hearing in the matter is scheduled for Monday before Assistant Charity Commissioner Salvi (ACC-5).

Mehta has sought an immediate stay order to prevent the passing of any illegal resolution aimed at removing him or Chetan Joshi from their positions as trustees.

Rajesh Mehta has contended that there is no provision in the trust deed for the removal of a permanent trustee. He cited multiple judgments of the Bombay High Court which, according to him, make it clear that the removal of a trustee can only be undertaken through due legal process by approaching the court. Such action, he argued, cannot be executed merely through a majority vote or board resolution.

He has requested the Assistant Charity Commissioner to restrain Prashant and Rajiv Mehta from taking any unlawful steps against him so that he can continue to discharge his duties as a trustee without interference.

Demand For Parambir Singh’s Reinstatement

In a related development, Rajesh Mehta has also objected to the removal of former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh from the post of Executive Director of the trust. He alleged that Singh was removed illegally and has demanded his reinstatement.

Singh himself has reportedly approached the Charity Commissioner challenging his removal and had earlier raised concerns about alleged financial irregularities within the trust.

Allegations of Forgery and Fund Diversion

Reiterating earlier claims, Rajesh Mehta alleged that Prashant and Rajiv Mehta siphoned off more than ₹100 crore from the trust by fabricating board minutes and resolutions. He claimed that forged resolutions dated February and June 2025 were used to change bank signatories in accounts held with ICICI Bank and Union Bank, despite no meetings having been conducted on those dates.

According to Mehta, during the January 12, 2026 board meeting, fabricated minutes of a July 2024 meeting were presented. While the original minutes mandated unanimous consent of all four permanent trustees for major decisions, the allegedly forged version introduced a ‘two trustee rule,’ enabling decisions without broader approval.

When he opposed these changes, Mehta claimed that he and his family were subjected to threats and verbal abuse, including threats to life.

He further alleged that CCTV footage shows original records being stolen from his assistant’s cabin, and that the trust office’s interference in hospital administration has led to a 14–16% decline in patient numbers, following complaints from senior doctors and department heads in January 2026.

Background Of The Trust

The Lilavati Kirtilal Mehta Medical Trust is a public charitable trust established in 1978 by the late Kirtilal Mehta. It manages Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre and undertakes several charitable initiatives across the country. In December 2023, Rajesh Mehta, Prashant Mehta and Rajiv Mehta were appointed as permanent trustees.

However, internal disputes have intensified over the past few months. Rajesh Mehta alleged that attempts were made to remove several department heads without justification in order to conceal financial irregularities.

With the matter now pending before both the Charity Commissioner and the court, Rajesh Mehta expressed hope that a stay order would be granted during Monday’s hearing. He stated that preventing his removal is crucial to protecting the trust’s assets and safeguarding hospital services. Further investigation, he suggested, could lead to major revelations in the case.
