Nitish Katara Case: SC Gives Delhi Govt Two Weeks To Decide On Convict’s Remission

The Supreme Court has directed the Delhi government to decide within two weeks on the remission plea of Sukhdev Pehalwan, convicted in the Nitish Katara murder case. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjwal Bhuiyan questioned the government on how Pehalwan would remain in jail beyond March 10, when his 20-year sentence ends.

The court emphasized that the matter pertains to an individual’s liberty. Pehalwan’s lawyer argued that since he has completed his sentence, he should released immediately.

In 2016, the Supreme Court reduced the sentences of co-accused Vikas Yadav and Vishal Yadav to 24 years, while Pehalwan’s sentence was reduced to 20 years. Previously, the Delhi High Court had sentenced Vikas and Vishal to 30 years and Pehalwan to 25 years, including an additional five-year term.

Nitish Katara Murder Case

A court convicted Vikas Yadav and Vishal Yadav for murdering Nitish Katara on February 17, 2002. Vishal Yadav is the nephew of UP politician DP Yadav. The Supreme Court had denied the death penalty for them, stating that the case was one of murder but not a heinous crime warranting life imprisonment.
