Governor Mangubhai Patel formally swore in Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva as the 29th Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court during a dignified ceremony held on Thursday at Raj Bhavan in Bhopal.
The Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Mangubhai Patel, administered the oath of office in the presence of senior officials and legal dignitaries.
The oath-taking ceremony saw the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda, Chief Secretary Anurag Jain, senior judge Justice Vivek Agarwal, and a host of senior bureaucrats and judicial officers.
Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav could not attend the event due to his ongoing foreign visit.
Justice Sachdeva’s appointment as Chief Justice crowns a career defined by dedication and legal acumen.
Born on 26 December 1964 in Delhi, he began his academic journey at Shri Ram College of Commerce, where he completed his B Com (Hons) in 1985, followed by an LLB from Delhi University in 1988.
That same year, he enrolled with the Delhi Bar Council, officially beginning his legal practice.
The British Council selected him in 1992 for a prestigious scholarship, allowing him to join four other Indian lawyers for the Commonwealth Young Lawyers Course at the University of London. This experience broadened his legal perspective through direct exposure to global legal systems.
By 1995, he earned recognition as an Advocate-on-Record in the Supreme Court of India, and over the following decades, served as counsel for the Bar Council of India in both the Delhi High Court and Supreme Court.
Journey Through the Judiciary
The authorities appointed Justice Sachdeva as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2013 and elevated him to a permanent judge in March 2015.
In May 2024, they transferred him to the Madhya Pradesh High Court, where he served as Acting Chief Justice during two tenures—first from July to September 2024, and again from May 2025, following the retirement of Chief Justice Suresh Kumar Kait.
The President gave assent to his appointment as permanent Chief Justice on 14 July 2025, finalising the decision.
In a related development, the authorities transferred Justice Vivek Kumar Singh from the Madras High Court to the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur, thereby reinforcing the judicial strength of the bench.
With this inclusion, the total number of judges at the Madhya Pradesh High Court has increased to 34.
Moreover, Justice Sachdeva’s leadership is expected to bring continued progress and efficiency to the judiciary in the state.
