A Delhi court on Saturday granted bail to businessman Robert Vadra in a money laundering case connected to a 2008 land transaction in Shikohpur village in Gurugram, Haryana.
The Rouse Avenue Court allowed bail on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 along with one surety of the same amount. The court has scheduled further hearings in the matter for July 10.
Vadra appeared before the court after it issued a summons in the case. The summons followed the court’s cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s prosecution complaint filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The case concerns alleged irregularities linked to the purchase of 3.53 acres of land in Shikohpur village.
The Enforcement Directorate has accused Vadra of generating proceeds of crime through the transaction.
According to the agency, Vadra’s company, Skylight Hospitality Private Limited, purchased the land from Omkareshwar Properties Private Limited in February 2008 for Rs 7.50 crore.
The ED has alleged that the transaction included false declarations in the sale deed, including the mention of a cheque that parties allegedly neither issued nor encashed. Investigators also claimed that the parties undervalued the land, resulting in stamp duty evasion.
The agency further alleged that proceeds generated from the deal routed through multiple entities allegedly linked to Vadra.
In its complaint, the ED identified Rs 58 crore as proceeds of crime. The agency said it had provisionally attached 43 immovable properties.
According to the ED, the properties linked to Vadra and related entities are worth Rs 38.69 crore.
Earlier in April, the court had summoned Vadra and eight others after taking cognisance of the ED complaint.
Separately, the Delhi High Court did not grant immediate relief to Vadra in his plea challenging the trial court’s order.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared for Vadra, while ED counsel Zoheb Hossain opposed the petition.
The High Court has listed the matter for hearing on May 18.
