Sikkim Statehood Day: PM Modi Praises State’s Progress And Youth

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the people of Sikkim on the occasion of the state’s Statehood Day and described the Himalayan state’s journey over the past five decades as remarkable and inspiring.

In a letter sent from his camp office in The Hague to Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang, the Prime Minister said the celebration carried special importance as it marked the conclusion of Sikkim’s 50-year Statehood celebrations.

PM Modi stated Sikkim had earned admiration across the country through its balanced development, strong cultural traditions, environmental awareness and social harmony. He noted that the state had built a unique identity over the years and continued to inspire people through its peaceful and progressive approach.

Recalling his recent visit to Sikkim in April, the Prime Minister said he was happy to finally attend the celebrations after an earlier visit could not take place because of weather conditions. He described his interaction with the people of the state as memorable and said the warmth shown during the roadshow in Gangtok left a lasting impression on him.

The Prime Minister particularly mentioned the enthusiasm of women and young people who participated in large numbers during the event. He also recalled playing football with local youth during the visit and praised the younger generation of Sikkim for being disciplined, ambitious and deeply connected to their roots.

PM Modi assured that the Centre would continue supporting the development of sports infrastructure in the state to help young athletes achieve their aspirations.

Reacting to the message, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang thanked the Prime Minister and said the people of Sikkim deeply valued his continued support, guidance and appreciation for the state’s culture, development and harmony.

Sikkim Statehood Day

Sikkim observes Statehood Day every year on May 16, marking its official entry into the Indian Union in 1975.

The occasion remembers the transformation of the former Himalayan monarchy into India’s 22nd state after a landmark public vote ended royal rule.

Prior to statehood, the Namgyal royal family governed Sikkim, which later came under India’s protection through the Indo-Sikkim Treaty signed in 1950.

In the referendum held in April 1975, an overwhelming majority of voters backed the decision to dismantle the monarchy and merge with India.

Following the outcome, the 36th Constitutional Amendment paved the way for Sikkim’s formal inclusion as a state on May 16, 1975.
