The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified its investigation into the Corbett Tiger Reserve illegal tree felling case. On Friday, ED questioned Tushit Rawat, son of former minister Harak Singh Rawat. Earlier, the ED interrogated Harak Singh Rawat, his wife Deepti Rawat, and their close associate Lakshmi Rana.
On December 26, the ED grilled Lakshmi Rana and her wife for six hours. Investigators focused on their bank accounts and properties. Deepti Rawat also faced questioning earlier, but the ED found her answers unsatisfactory. The agency summoned her again to explain properties in her name and clarify her income sources.
The case began with a CBI investigation that revealed 6,903 trees were cut instead of the approved 163 in the Pakharo range. The CBI filed an FIR in 2023, leading to the ED’s probe into suspected money laundering.
In February, the ED raided 16 locations, seizing Rs 1.10 crore in cash and land registries worth over Rs 80 lakh. The agency also froze six lockers. One locker, linked to Lakshmi Rana, contained jewelry worth Rs 45 lakh. Rana, a political ally of Harak Singh Rawat, held prominent positions, including District Panchayat President of Rudraprayag and general secretary of the Congress.
The ED suspects money from the illegal tree felling was laundered. It has intensified efforts to trace financial transactions linked to the case. Investigators aim to hold those involved accountable.
The probe continues to uncover more evidence, focusing on the financial aspects of the illegal operation. With high-profile interrogations and mounting proof, the investigation widens.
