Delhi High Court Stays Appointment Of Anilkumar Prabhakaran As AIFF General Secretary

The Delhi High Court has stayed the appointment of Anilkumar Prabhakaran as the General Secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

The stay came after a petition filed by Delhi Football Club director Ranjit Bajaj, who argued that Prabhakaran’s appointment violated the National Sports Code.

Justice Sachin Dutta, while hearing the petition, directed that the next hearing will take place next week.

Justice Dutta stated that, in the interim, Prabhakaran’s appointment should remain on hold.

The judge remarked, “We will continue the hearing next week, but in the meantime, I must impose a stay,” before adjourning the case to April 8.

Petition Prabhakaran’s Prior Election

Bajaj, with advocates Rahul Mehra and Shivam Singh, filed the petition seeking Prabhakaran’s removal.

The petition argues that Prabhakaran’s prior election to the AIFF Executive Committee disqualifies him from becoming General Secretary.

The National Sports Code prevents federations from appointing individuals who hold certain positions to executive posts within the same federation.

Background Of AIFF Appointment

In July 2024, the AIFF appointed Prabhakaran, a resident of Kerala, as its General Secretary.

Bajaj’s concerns over conflicts of interest and National Sports Code violations have brought the move under legal scrutiny.

As the case progresses, the Delhi High Court will review the legal validity of Prabhakaran’s appointment, with the next hearing set for April 8.

The outcome of this case could have significant implications for future appointments and governance within the AIFF.
