Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyay has submitted a report to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna regarding the alleged recovery of cash from the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma.
The report comes after an internal inquiry was initiated by Justice Upadhyay to investigate the matter.
Delhi High Court In-House Inquiry And Report Submission
Chief Justice Upadhyay began the in-house inquiry to collect evidence and details surrounding the incident, which reportedly took place after a fire broke out at Justice Verma’s official residence on March 14.
The fire, which occurred around 11:35 pm, prompted the arrival of fire brigade personnel, who allegedly found cash during the firefighting operation.
Justice Upadhyay submitted his findings to the Supreme Court on Friday, following a detailed internal investigation.
However, the Director General (DG) of the Fire Brigade has clarified that no cash was found at Justice Verma’s residence during the fire extinguishing efforts.
Despite this, rumors and misinformation have circulated regarding the presence of cash, prompting a response from the Supreme Court.
Supreme Court Responds To Misinformation
The Supreme Court stated on Friday addressing the rumors and misinformation surrounding the incident at Justice Verma’s residence.
The court emphasized that there had been no confirmation regarding the cash claim and urged against the spread of unverified information.
Justice Upadhyay’s internal inquiry has also led to the initiation of disciplinary action against Justice Yashwant Verma. Furthermore, there is a proposal to transfer him to the Allahabad High Court as part of the ongoing examination of the situation.
Collegium Meeting On Justice Verma’s Transfer
On March 20, a meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium, comprising CJI Sanjeev Khanna and four senior judges, took place to review the proposal for Justice Verma’s transfer.
Following the meeting, the Supreme Court sent official letters to the Chief Justices of the relevant High Courts, including one for Justice Verma.
The issue surfaced on March 14 when a fire broke out at Justice Verma’s official residence in Delhi.
The fire brigade promptly dispatched personnel to control the blaze, during which they allegedly discovered cash.
Since then, the matter has sparked further inquiry and speculation, with the investigation continuing.
