Delhi HC Protects Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Privacy; Bans Unauthorised Use Of Her Persona

The Delhi High Court, under Justice Tejas Kariyawasam, has imposed a ban on the unauthorised use of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s voice, name, and photographs.

This order is a landmark ruling aimed at protecting the personal rights and privacy of one of India’s most celebrated film actresses.

The court emphasised that the unauthorised use of an individual’s personal attributes infringes on the right to privacy.

This decision marks a strong stance against the misuse of celebrity identity, especially in the digital era, where such violations are increasingly common.

The court instructed Google to remove and block all content involving the actress’s voice, images, and name within 72 hours of receiving the court’s notice.

It also directed various e-commerce platforms to take similar action immediately to prevent further misuse.

Involvement of Government Departments

The court has additionally called upon the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Technology to take proactive measures.

Both bodies are required to submit sealed reports regarding the steps taken to curb the unauthorised use of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s identity.

Justice Kariyawasam noted that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is among the biggest personalities in the Indian entertainment industry and has served as the face of numerous brands.

The court acknowledged that the public’s trust is closely linked to her image, and any misuse would harm her reputation and credibility.

The court also observed that the respondent companies are misusing AI and other technological tools to exploit Bachchan’s identity, adversely affecting her dignity and standing.

This misuse of cutting-edge technology has raised serious concerns about protecting individual rights in the digital domain.

In her petition, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sought legal protection of her personality rights, demanding that no one should use her name, image, voice, or identity without authorisation.

She cited numerous instances of misleading, fake, and objectionable content spreading on social media and online platforms, which could tarnish her reputation.

Unauthorised Use Leading to Public Confusion

The petition also pointed out that several websites and companies are using her name and images without consent, violating her privacy and misleading the public.

The court further recognised the seriousness of this issue and vowed to uphold the actress’s rights.

The court has scheduled the next hearing in the matter for 15 January 2026.

This ruling follows similar cases where prominent figures like Aaradhya Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Rajinikanth, and Virat Kohli have sought judicial protection for their personal rights.

This ruling reaffirms the judiciary’s commitment to protecting the digital privacy and personal rights of public figures in India, setting a precedent for future cases involving unauthorised use of identity in the digital age.
