On Thursday, the Supreme Court dismissed a plea asking the government to call off the India-Pakistan cricket game.
The India-Pakistan match will take place on September 14 at Dubai International Stadium. It serves as a marquee fixture of the Asia Cup T20 series.
A bench of Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice Viswanathan made it clear that the match will proceed as planned.
Advocate-on-Record Ansar Ahmed Chaudhary filed the petition on behalf of Urvashi Jain. Others are asking the Court to direct the government to call off the India-Pakistan match amid recent security developments.
Highlighting the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, the petitioners also drew attention to Operation Sindoor, where Indian forces dismantled terror hideouts across the border.
They stressed that holding the match now would dishonour the dedication and sacrifices of soldiers and national defenders.
They emphasised that proceeding with the game would disrespect the sacrifices of the armed forces and fallen heroes. The petitioners’ lawyer urged the Court to hear the matter urgently, pointing out that the game is only days away.
The petitioners also called for wider reforms in sports administration, insisting that the BCCI be placed under the supervision of the Union Sports Ministry.
It argued that protecting national security and safeguarding the country’s integrity were far more important and further stated that honouring the spirit of soldiers outweighed the excitement of a cricket match.
The Supreme Court rejected the submissions, making it clear that the scheduled match could not be stopped.
With the Supreme Court’s decision, the India-Pakistan game in Dubai on September 14 will go ahead as planned. It is likely to be one of the most talked-about matches of the tournament.
