In a significant development, the Delhi High Court has ordered Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), and social media platform X to remove a controversial video by journalist Shyam Meera Singh.
The video in question, which was uploaded by Singh, allegedly contains defamatory content about Isha Foundation and its founder, Sadhguru.
The interim order was passed by Justice Subramaniam Prasad, who directed that the video should not only be taken down but also that no further dissemination should occur on social media platforms.
The court prohibited the public from uploading or sharing the video on any platform, asserting that it contained false and harmful information regarding the Foundation.
The legal proceedings stemmed from a petition filed by Isha Foundation, which expressed concerns about the damage caused to its reputation by Singh’s video.
The Foundation claimed that the video was malicious and presented fabricated claims about the organization and Sadhguru.
The Delhi High Court will further hear the matter on May 9, as it scheduled the next hearing.
Shyam Meera Singh released the video, in which he raised several issues related to Isha Foundation and its practices.
The Foundation’s legal team described the video as ‘malicious and false’, asserting that it misrepresented the facts.
Singh uploaded the video when Isha Foundation hosted its Maha Shivaratri event, which prominent figures like Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended.
The Isha Foundation’s counsel highlighted that Singh strategically released the video just two days before Maha Shivaratri, a time when the event was gaining widespread media attention.
The Foundation argued that the video aimed to create unnecessary controversy and spread false narratives about their organization.
In addition to seeking the removal of the video, Isha Foundation’s counsel pointed out that Singh had previously sent an email to the Foundation’s representatives in February, claiming to be a journalist.
In the email, Singh mentioned his intention to create a video concerning a fabricated issue involving Isha Foundation, accusing the organization of unethical practices.
The legal team further emphasized that the video had gained significant traction, accumulating over nine lakh views and 13,000 comments, many of which were negative and defamatory.
The video’s viral nature caused considerable harm to Isha Foundation’s image, as it sparked derogatory comments on social media platforms.
The Delhi High Court’s ruling to remove the video by Shyam Meera Singh marks a critical moment in the ongoing legal battle between the journalist and Isha Foundation.
As the court moves forward with the case, the interim order aims to prevent further harm to the Foundation’s reputation.
The next hearing on May 9 will likely see further developments in this high-profile defamation case.
