Delhi HC Directs DU To Comply With Order Allowing Minority Student In Classes Amid Seat Dispute

The Delhi High Court has ordered Delhi University to follow its ruling that allows a minority-category student to attend classes at St. Stephen’s College amid a seat dispute. Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela issued this directive after DU informed the court it had filed a petition to withdraw the October 28 order, which permitted the student to study until further instructions.

Court Warns DU Officials of Legal Consequences

The court warned DU officials, stating they must respect the law. “If the contemnors think they are above the law, we will tell them they are not,” the bench remarked. The court stressed that DU must comply with the order until it is legally withdrawn. This came in response to a contempt petition against university authorities for allegedly disregarding the judicial directive.

DU Promises Compliance; Court Schedules Next Hearing

DU’s lawyer assured the court that DU would follow the October 28 order and ensure the student’s rights remain protected. The court accepted this assurance and set a hearing for November 11 to address both DU’s request to rescind the order and the contempt petition. In October, the division bench had permitted the student to attend classes, noting a vacant seat under the minority quota. The court also instructed St. Stephen’s not to allocate additional minority quota seats until further orders.
