Delhi HC Demands Tihar Jail’s Report On Yasin Malik’s Health Amid Hunger Strike And Treatment Plea

The Delhi High Court has asked Tihar Jail to submit a health report for Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, who is serving life imprisonment for terror funding. Malik began a hunger strike on November 1, demanding immediate treatment at AIIMS or another super-specialty hospital. Justice Anoop Kumar Mendiratta instructed the jail superintendent to submit Malik’s health report by Monday. The court also directed the jail to ensure Malik receives all necessary medical care per jail rules.

Lawyer Describes Malik’s Critical Condition

Malik’s lawyer reported that his health has rapidly deteriorated due to his hunger strike. According to his lawyer, Malik can no longer stand or walk and requires a stretcher to move. Malik claims to suffer from severe heart and kidney conditions, further underscoring his need for specialized treatment.

Malik Challenges Jail Restrictions in Court

Malik’s petition also opposes a Union Home Ministry order barring him from staying in Delhi or Tihar Jail for a year from December 2023. In May 2022, a trial court sentenced Malik to life after he pleaded guilty to terror funding charges, accepting a fine of Rs 10 lakh under the UAPA. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had argued that Malik confessed to avoid the death penalty. The High Court will address Malik’s demand to ensure his appearance in Delhi courts when necessary.
