Russian President Vladimir Putin praised India’s rapid rise under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a “natural partner and ally for decades.” At the Valdai International Discussion Club in Sochi on Thursday, he emphasized that India belongs among the world’s great powers due to its large population, ancient culture, and impressive economic growth. Putin commended PM Modi’s “Make in India” initiative, adding that India has maintained the highest growth rate among major economies.
Growing India-Russia Cooperation in Trade and Energy
Putin highlighted the steady increase in trade between India and Russia. He noted that Russia is ready to supply more energy, including liquefied natural gas (LNG), to meet India’s rising demand. Russia’s investments in India’s energy sector have reached $20 billion. He emphasized the importance of new technology and vowed to deepen cooperation in nuclear energy, where Russia is already constructing power plants in India. India-Russia cooperation in fertilizer supplies for Indian agriculture is also expanding.
Russia-India Defense Relations at a High Level of Trust
Putin detailed the strong defense cooperation, citing Russia’s advanced military technology in service with India’s armed forces. The BrahMos missile system, jointly developed by the two countries, now operates in air, sea, and land applications. Putin described the defense partnership as one rooted in “a high level of trust” and development, rather than simple transactions.
Putin also thanked PM Modi for his role in promoting dialogue on the Ukraine conflict, expressing respect for his peace proposals. Reflecting on the “time-tested” India-Russia relationship, he recalled the Soviet Union’s support for India’s independence and the unique bond both nations continue to share. He affirmed that the Indian people’s strong support for ties with Russia solidifies this relationship.
