Supreme Court Issues Stern Warning to Punjab and Tamil Nadu Governors
In a significant development, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, strongly reprimanded the governors of Punjab and Tamil Nadu, following accusations from the respective state governments of undue delays in approving bills passed by the assemblies. The bench emphasized the importance of adhering to established traditions in India’s parliamentary democracy, stating, “Please don’t deflect the course of bills passed by a duly elected assembly. It’s a matter of very serious concern.”

Expressing dissatisfaction with the situation in Punjab, the court warned against undermining democratic principles and traditions. The Punjab government, represented by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, had moved the Supreme Court, alleging that Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s delay in assenting to bills had brought the administration to a “grinding halt.” Singhvi pointed out that seven bills, including those related to fiscal management and education, were pending since their submission in July.

To address the issue, the court directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to provide details of the action taken by Governor Banwarilal Purohit on the pending bills. The ongoing feud between the Punjab governor and the Aam Aadmi Party government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann adds complexity to the situation.
Similarly, the Tamil Nadu government sought the Supreme Court’s intervention, accusing the Governor of intentionally delaying bills and “undermining the will of the people.” The conflict between Chief Minister MK Stalin and Governor Ravi has been ongoing, encompassing disagreements on pending bills, foreign trips, the Dravidian model of governance, and remarks on the state’s name.
The court’s stern stance reflects concerns about potential threats to democratic processes and the need to uphold the established norms of governance in the country.
