During a massive public rally in Darrang district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sharply criticised Congress for its handling of Assam and the Northeast during the 1962 Chinese aggression.
He accused the then Congress leadership of abandoning the region, leaving it vulnerable to advancing Chinese troops.
“The wounds from that betrayal have yet to heal,” PM Modi said, underlining the enduring scars felt by the people of Assam.
He claimed that the present-day Congress continues this legacy by protecting illegal infiltrators and anti-national elements, rather than standing resolutely with India’s armed forces and safeguarding Assam’s interests.
“The Congress of today plays with Assam’s security and identity,” he asserted.
PM Modi reiterated the BJP’s firm commitment to protecting Assam from demographic changes caused by illegal infiltration. He declared that his party would never allow outsiders to claim Assam’s land or undermine its cultural fabric.
Highlighting the stark contrast between Congress’s neglect and the BJP’s dedication, PM Modi criticised the former’s poor infrastructure record in Assam.
“Congress ruled Assam for decades but built only three bridges over the Brahmaputra. In the last ten years, our government has completed six new bridges,” he said, emphasising the BJP’s focus on connectivity and development.
Celebrating Assam’s Growth
The Prime Minister praised the ‘double-engine’ BJP government in Assam, led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, for propelling rapid economic growth.
“India is the fastest-growing country in the world, and Assam is among its fastest-growing states, with a growth rate of 13 per cent,” PM Modi stated, attributing this transformation to the resilience of Assam’s people and proactive governance.
PM Modi addressed criticism from Congress over awarding the Bharat Ratna to Assam’s cultural icon Bhupen Hazarika.
“People may abuse me as much as they want. I am a devotee of Lord Shiva and can absorb all the poison,” he remarked. He emphasised that he cannot remain silent when others, like ‘Bhupen Da’, are insulted.
Turning to the crowd, PM Modi sought validation for his decision: “Was it right or wrong to honour Bhupen Da with the Bharat Ratna?”
Prime Minister Modi’s address in Darrang combined a sharp historical critique with a robust defence of his government’s achievements.
His remarks sought to galvanise public support by contrasting the BJP’s developmental agenda with Congress’s alleged failures, reaffirming his commitment to Assam’s security, identity, and growth.
