Haryana Congress MLA Vinesh Phogat has brought attention to the challenges faced by women who dare to raise their voices against injustice, drawing from her own experiences.
Phogat made these remarks during a press conference held on Monday alongside Alka Lamba, the president of the All India Mahila Congress.
The event aimed to express solidarity with Roshni Jaiswal, a Youth Congress leader from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, who recently made headlines after allegedly assaulting a BJP supporter over threats of sexual violence made against her on social media.
During the press conference, a video wa presented featuring Jaiswal, who described a disturbing incident in September when she slapped a man named Rajesh Kumar in response to the threats.
Following the altercation, Jaiswal claimed to have received a notice regarding the potential attachment of her house.
Phogat asserted that women who stand up for their rights often face suppression.
She stated, “As women willing to fight, our fault seems to be our resilience. BJP or UP government officials have yet to respond. While my hope from the BJP government is limited, women like Sakshi Malik and I continue to fight because we know firsthand how voices are suppressed.”
Emphasizing the importance of women’s safety, Phogat remarked, “50 percent of our population is women, and our rights and safety matter. Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah may forget this, but I will fight till the end.”
“Why did those in saffron not raise their voices when we were fighting for women’s safety and rights against Brij Bhushan?” she questioned.
Alka Lamba echoed Phogat’s sentiments. She highlighted that Jaiswal had previously stood up for a BJP booth president’s daughter against harassment.
Lamba criticized the BJP for attempting to undermine the voices of women who are willing to confront injustice, declaring, “The BJP intends to break the strength and voice of women who want to fight back.”
Furthermore, Lamba lambasted the Central government’s ‘Beti Bachao’ initiative, labeling it an empty promise and asking the Prime Minister if any woman had achieved justice during his decade in power.
Asked about rising crimes against women in Wayanad, she clarified that their focus extends beyond any single region or party.
“We aim to amplify the voices of women from every state and our primary goal is to ensure their safety and justice. It is fortunate that Wayanad will be voting for their women MP, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who will undoubtedly strengthen our mission,” Lamba stated.
