On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever held talks in New Delhi, with discussions covering key areas of the India-Belgium partnership and wider international developments.
The meeting at Hyderabad House focused on defence, trade, investment, innovation, semiconductors, fintech, critical minerals, academic cooperation and people-to-people ties.
The two leaders exchanged views on regional and global matters and agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations.
During the meeting, India and Belgium witnessed the signing of agreements covering defence, renewable energy, cooperation against crime and diplomatic training.
The two countries agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade over the next five years. Plans include establishing business and investment forums, along with a dedicated consular dialogue mechanism.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister PK Mishra, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George and other officials attended the talks.
De Wever arrived in New Delhi earlier on Thursday for a three-day official visit, his first to India since becoming Belgian Prime Minister in February last year. It is the first visit by a Belgian Prime Minister to India in two decades and follows the Belgian Economic Mission led by Princess Astrid in March 2025.
As part of his Delhi programme, De Wever will likely deliver a keynote address at a Confederation of Indian Industry business event linked to the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. He will travel to Mumbai on Friday and meet stakeholders from the diamond, ports and logistics sectors.
The visit is aimed at expanding cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, technology, renewable energy, connectivity and people-to-people ties, while strengthening wider India-EU and India-Europe engagement.
