A 30-member delegation of the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum (WBJDF) reached the state Secretariat Nabanna on Thursday to hold talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over their demands related to the R.G. Kar rape and murder case. However, uncertainty looms as the junior doctors insist on a live telecast of the meeting, a demand the state government has rejected.
State Government Offers to Record Meeting
While the government agreed to a 30-member delegation instead of the previously set limit of 15, it refused the demand for live telecast. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, in an email, offered to record the meeting to ensure transparency, but junior doctors are standing firm on their demand for live broadcast.
“We won’t join the talks unless the meeting is live-streamed. The public has a right to know what happens,” said a member of the delegation.
Protests Continue Despite Supreme Court Order
The doctors have also demanded the suspension of top health officials, including the state Health Secretary. On Monday, the Supreme Court ordered the protesting doctors to resume work by Tuesday evening, threatening disciplinary action. However, the medics have continued their protests and remain in a deadlock with the state administration over the issue.
