West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has intensified his criticism of the state government, condemning its failure to maintain law and order and describing the situation as bizarre.
His remarks came in the wake of a violent incident at R G Kar Hospital on 14 August, where an unidentified mob caused significant damage to the campus, vehicles, and public property.
In a pointed statement on Friday, Governor Bose expressed frustration over the inability of the public to distinguish between law enforcement and criminal elements.
“The government is primarily responsible for this; there is no law and order in the state,” he remarked, highlighting the public’s eroded trust in the authorities.
The Governor’s criticism follows concerns about the handling of the vandalism incident and the ongoing rape-murder case involving a trainee doctor.
Bose accused officials of attempting to obscure the truth by misrepresenting the incident as a suicide and pointed to deliberate tampering and destruction of evidence as evidence of systemic failures.
West Bengal Governor Calls For Reforms
During his visit to R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Bose expressed dismay upon learning that nursing students had faced threats of rape, calling the situation both humiliating and distressing.
He emphasized the need for significant reforms to restore public confidence and ensure justice.
Bose has called on the government to address the demands for justice from the youth, underscoring their critical role in shaping the future of society.
He has requested a detailed report on the incident and expressed hope that the judiciary will play a crucial role following the case’s transfer to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee however accused political opponents of inciting unrest in the state.
The Kolkata Police have arrested 25 suspects related to the vandalism, while the CBI has summoned four doctors from R G Kar Hospital as protests continue over the rape-murder case, which has sparked nationwide outrage.
