The opposition BJP has signaled strong discontent, particularly regarding the omission of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital doctor rape-murder case from the session’s ‘obituary mentions’.
This practice, which acknowledges recent deaths, has sparked outrage among opposition members, as the horrific crime involving the doctor is notably absent from the list.
Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition, highlighted that the obituary mentions only former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who passed away last month.
Adhikari has indicated that should the name of the rape victim remain excluded, BJP legislators will likely stage a protest.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the special session during a recent event celebrating the Trinamool Congress’ student wing foundation day.
This announcement comes amid widespread criticism of her administration, which is facing scrutiny both nationally and internationally over allegations of evidence tampering and the handling of the case.
Critics argue that the proposed Bill may be redundant, given the existing robust anti-rape laws in India.
Additionally, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is actively investigating both the rape and murder case and alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College, as mandated by court orders.
