The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) issued a show cause notice to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, on Saturday. Ghosh has 72 hours to respond, or his medical registration may be canceled.

The notice comes after the state health department suspended Ghosh from state medical services due to ongoing criminal proceedings against him. He is currently in Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) custody for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital.

On August 28, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended Ghosh, citing the disrepute he brought to the profession. The West Bengal Orthopedic Association (WBOA) followed suit, terminating his membership on September 3.

In addition to the financial irregularities case, Ghosh is being investigated by the CBI in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar last month. The CBI is examining potential links between the two cases, amid allegations that the victim was killed after discovering the irregularities.

A crucial Supreme Court hearing on the rape and murder case is scheduled for Monday, where the CBI will submit progress reports on its investigation.
