‘War Didn’t Finish On May 10, It Continued For Long’: Gen Upendra Dwivedi On Operation Sindoor

Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Friday released the book ‘Operation Sindoor: The Untold Story of India’s Deep Strikes Inside Pakistan’, authored by Lt Gen (retd) KJS Dhillon. The launch took place at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.

The book chronicles the strategic and multi-domain offensive carried out by the Indian Army across the Line of Control (LoC) earlier this year. General Dwivedi, speaking at the event, clarified that Operation Sindoor extended far beyond its widely reported 88-hour duration.

“You may be thinking the war finished on 10th May. No. It continued for a long time,” the Army Chief said.

He explained that key decisions on timing, scale, and operational depth were taken after continuous deliberations.

Veterans Contributed to Strategic Planning

General Dwivedi revealed that consultations with veterans played a crucial role.

“I spoke to many veterans on April 22-23. They presented brilliant ideas,” he said. The Army weighed several strategic options before selecting an approach aligned with national interest.

He added that every action and deliberate non-action during Operation Sindoor had long-term strategic implications.

The operation was marked by precision, coordination, and synergy within the ranks.

Describing the execution, he further said, “The Indian Army moved like a rhythmic wave. In those 88 hours, everybody was synergised and knew their orders.”

Book Captures Spirit of the Indian Army

General Dwivedi called the book more than a military record, stating, “It’s not just a narrative of a military operation, but a tribute to the courage, professionalism, and unyielding spirit of the Indian Army and the nation.”

He highlighted how India often underestimates the emotional and strategic weight of battles along the LoC.

“We have become so accustomed to this kind of conflict that we often fail to realise its relevance,” he remarked.

The Army Chief said the book ensures that the lessons and legacy of Operation Sindoor are preserved for future generations. It offers insight into India’s evolving strategic posture and the unseen depth of modern military operations.
