Train travellers often prefer a lower berth because it offers easier access, more comfortable boarding and a convenient sleeping arrangement.
Getting one is not simply a matter of selecting the berth preference while booking.
Indian Railways follows specific rules and priority categories when allotting lower berths.
Who Gets Priority?
Senior citizens receive the highest priority for lower berths. Men aged 60 years and above and women aged 58 years and above can receive lower berths subject to availability.
Women above 45 years travelling alone receive priority. Pregnant women and passengers with disabilities can receive lower berths under the applicable quota and reservation rules.
How Is the Berth Allotted?
Passengers who select the appropriate quota, such as ‘Senior Citizen/Lower Berth’, can receive a lower berth automatically if one is available.
Selecting the preference does not guarantee a lower berth, as allotment depends on availability and the applicable reservation rules.
Passengers should check their berth after the reservation chart is prepared. If another passenger occupies their confirmed berth and refuses to vacate it, they can approach the on-duty TTE for assistance.
How to Book a Lower Berth?
Passengers can book tickets through the IRCTC website by entering their boarding and destination stations. After selecting the train and class, they need to enter passenger details and choose their preferred berth.
The railway system will allot the berth based on availability and applicable priority rules. Once the booking is confirmed, passengers receive their ticket details through SMS and email.
