Tension gripped the Mahal area of Nagpur on Sunday after a violent clash between two groups. The violence followed allegations of Quran burning during a demonstration by Bajrang Dal members. The incident led to stone-pelting, damaged vehicles, and police intervention.
Allegations Of Quran Burning Trigger Unrest
Rumors spread that Bajrang Dal members burned the Quran during a protest near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue. The protest aimed at burning an effigy of Aurangzeb. Viral videos of the demonstration sparked outrage among the Muslim community.
A complaint was filed at Ganeshpeth police station, accusing Bajrang Dal members of burning the holy book. Bajrang Dal leaders denied the allegations, stating they only burned the effigy. In response, large crowds from the Muslim community gathered in Mahal, Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, and Chitanvis Park. Police increased patrolling and deployed additional forces to prevent escalation.
Police Fire Tear Gas To Control Nagpur Violence
The situation escalated as police fired tear gas shells and used batons to disperse mobs in Chitnis Park and Mahal. The violence quickly spread to Kotwali and Ganeshpeth by late afternoon. Reports confirmed that rioters set fire to several four-wheelers and threw stones at homes along the Chitnis Park to Shukrawari Talao road.
The violence began shortly after Bajrang Dal’s demonstration in the afternoon. Authorities have imposed heavy police presence to restore order and prevent further clashes. Police are investigating the incident and verifying the allegations.
