West Bengal violence
In Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal, a disturbing incident captured in a viral video has sparked outrage and political condemnation. The video depicts a couple subjected to brutal assault, allegedly as punishment for their perceived ‘illicit relationship’ during a ‘salishi sabha’ (Kangaroo court) in Chopra.
Leaders from various political parties, including BJP and CPI(M), have shared the video, condemning the violence. The BJP’s Bengal unit has identified the main assailant as a local TMC leader known as Tajemul alias ‘JCB’. Police Superintendent Joby Thomas K confirmed that the police have taken cognizance of the video and registered a case, initiating efforts to apprehend the culprit.
The video shows a man, purportedly Tajemul, viciously beating the woman while also assaulting another man with a bamboo stick. Amit Malviya, BJP IT Cell head, criticized the incident, attributing it to what he termed the “ugly face” of governance under Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal. He accused local TMC leadership of condoning such acts of ‘quick justice’ through informal ‘insaf’ sabhas.

Responding to the allegations, TMC MLA Hamidur Rahman distanced himself from the accused, asserting that the incident was a local matter and not representative of party policy. TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal suggested that the assault stemmed from community disapproval of the couple’s alleged relationship, promising an internal investigation.
CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim also condemned the incident, describing it as an example of “bulldozer justice” under Mamata Banerjee’s governance. He criticized what he perceived as summary punishment meted out by alleged TMC affiliates.
The incident has highlighted concerns over vigilante justice and the rule of law in the region, prompting calls for thorough investigation and accountability from political leaders and civil society alike.
