Victims From Sandeshkhali Seek Justice As They Meet President Draupadi Murmu

Victims of sexual harassment from Sandeshkhali met President Draupadi Murmu in Delhi today, followed by addressing the media.

Victims from Sandeshkhali Meet President Draupadi Murmu: Today, aggrieved women from Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, shared their plight with the President. Women belonging to the tribal and Dalit communities residing in Sandeshkhali, situated in the North Twenty-four Parganas district of West Bengal, later addressed the media at the Constitution Club, shedding light on the prevailing conditions in their area.

The victimized women allege that for several years, TMC leader Shahjanha Shaikh and his associates have subjected Dalit tribal women to social, economic, and physical exploitation. If any woman opposes them, her family members are assaulted, and their children face threats of violence. The victims revealed that despite visits from the National Scheduled Tribe Commission, Scheduled Caste Commission, and Women’s Commission, and promises of justice, Sheikh Shahjahan’s henchmen continue to roam freely due to the protection of the state government.

Threats of Family Members’ Murder if Statements are not Changed

The victims reported that even though Shahjahan Sheikh has been apprehended by the CBI, his brothers Siraj Sheikh and Alamgir are continuously intimidating them, warning that if they do not retract their statements, their family members will be killed. The victimized women demanded the arrest of both Shahjahan Sheikh’s brothers by the CBI and the establishment of a fear-free environment in Sandeshkhali.

Allegations Against Shahjahan Sheikh and the Complicit Administration

Women from the Dalit and tribal communities alleged that Shahjahan Sheikh has created an atmosphere in Sandeshkhali where the police and administrative personnel are under his influence. Sheikh’s men are involved in seizing tribal land and holding them captive. Those who raise their voices against him are subjected to beatings by TMC thugs, brandishing weapons and issuing death threats.

TMC Government’s Alleged Inaction

Five women from Sandesh Khali demonstrated courage by coming to Delhi to speak to the national media. They insisted that the CBI should arrest TMC leaders and Shahjahan Sheikh’s brothers to ensure justice. The victimized women expressed concern that their families, particularly their young children, are under constant threat of violence, while the state government appears to be protecting the perpetrators instead of assisting the victims. They pointed out that the accused have not been charged under the Prevention of Atrocities and Protection of Civil Rights Act, crucial for safeguarding SC-ST communities against oppression.
